Brown has an excellent command of beginning vocabulary for emerging independent readers. She defines important terms, such as slap shots, shoot-outs, and grand slams, so that readers clearly understand their meanings. Plenty of colorful photographs enhance the texts. A short glossary, an age-appropriate list for further reading, and two Web sites are appended. Each of these small-scale offerings is organized into four chapters: a history of the sport, basics, highlights of the sport, and championship games. Within these chapters the information is somewhat randomly dispensed, making the reader's prior knowledge of the sport all but required.
